This has to be the coolest place to be in Cape Town…
I am a total Luke Dale-Roberts fan. I love what he’s done with The Test Kitchen. In fact I went there with my husband a few years ago, then as soon as we got home to Italy, we re-designed our whole kitchen based on the pictures we took that night at his restaurant. But it’s not about the decor. His food is just fantastic. He doesn’t just care about the way his food looks (and it looks damn good)…. its all about how good it tastes. All his combinations just seem to work.
Since our first visit to The Test Kitchen a few years ago, it’s been near impossible to get another booking there. It doesn’t help that we are only in South Africa for one month of the year, which happens to fall in mid-season in SA. Impossible to get tables at most top restaurants in Cape Town (after all, it IS the new foodie holiday destination!), never mind at the Test Kitchen, by far the most popular restaurant in Cape Town right now.
In a way I am not sad about this because luckily he has another more casual restaurant, The Pot Luck Club, which I just love going to. The Pot Luck Club is more like a tapas restaurant. His menu is divided into 5 different tastes, salty, sour, sweet, umami and bitter. The idea is to order many dishes and share each plate. Luckily on our last visit, we went with 6 people so we were able to order almost everything on the menu. Each plate did not disappoint. Every bite you take is just bursting with flavours. To take a quote from his website,
“We all want the same thing - For the diner to be blown away by the combination of flavours and the taste experience that we have put so much effort into creating.”
And boy, does he do it perfectly. I’m already looking forward to my next visit to SA at the end of the year, and would recommend any of his restaurants, to anyone visiting SA any time soon.
