How to care for your Japanese bath

In order to enjoy your Japanese bath for many years, here are a few important considerations.

General Care of your Bathtub.

  • While you are not using the bath, ventilate the room and keep it from getting too humid.

  • After taking a bath, drain the water and wipe the bathtub with a soft cloth.

  • Do not expose the bathtub to direct sunlight, as this may cause cracks.

  • If you are not using the bathtub for many days, place a bucket full of water in the bathtub and put a cover on the bathtub so that it does not get too dry.

  • Clean the bathtub at least once a week with a special detergent New Wood Bath Clean, HINOKISOKEN’s original product. If the special detergent is not available, baby shampoo can be a substitute. Dilute the baby shampoo 10 fold with water.

  • After cleaning, wash away the liquid completely wipe it with a soft cloth.

  • Never use a powder cleanser as it damages the bathtub.

To clean black mould on the bathtub.

The warnings given in the detergent label should be respected. Ventilate the bathroom well and wear plastic gloves while doing this.

  • Dilute a commercially available chlorine bleach 10 fold with water.

  • Soak the liquid into non-colored cloths and put them on the spots for 30 minutes.

  • Take the cloths off and wash the bathtub with water sufficiently.

  • Be aware that leaving the soaked cloths on for more than 30 minutes may decolor and damage the bathtub.
